Chasing Youth, Many Gamble on Hormones ÀþÀ½À» ã±â À§ÇØ È£¸£¸ó¿¡ ÀÇÁö
Dr. Ron Livesey was fat, tired and out of shape. At 49, he felt that his best years were behind him. ·Ð ¶óÀ̺꼼ÀÌ ¹Ú»ç´Â ¶×¶×Çϸç ÇǰïÇÏ°í ¸öÀÌ º¼ ǰ ¾ø´Ù. 49¼¼¿¡ ±×´Â ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ ÃÖ°í Àü¼º±â°¡ Áö³ª°¬´Ù°í ´À²¼´Ù.
So one day seven years ago, on his way to a medical meeting, he stopped at a doctor's office in Palm Springs, Calif., for his first hormone injections. ±×·¡¼ 7³â Àü ¾î´À ³¯ ÀÇÇÐ ¸ðÀÓ¿¡ °¡´ø µµÁß¿¡ ±×´Â óÀ½À¸·Î È£¸£¸ó Áֻ縦 ¸Â±â À§ÇØ Ä¶¸®Æ÷´Ï¾Æ ÆÊ ½ºÇÁ¸µ¿¡ ÀÖ´Â ÇÑ ÀÇ»çÀÇ »ç¹«½ÇÀ» ã¾Ò´Ù.
Early the next morning, Dr. Livesey was at the meeting, sitting in a darkened auditorium watching slides of technical data. To his surprise, he found himself alert, taking everything in. He continued the hormone treatments. ´ÙÀ½³¯ ¾Æħ ÀÏÂï ¶óÀ̺꼼ÀÌ ¹Ú»ç´Â ¾îµÎ¿î °Àǽǿ¡ ¾É¾Æ Àü¹®ÀûÀÎ ½½¶óÀ̵å ÀڷḦ º¸¸é¼ ȸÀÇ¿¡ Âü¼®Çϰí ÀÖ¾ú´Ù. ³î¶ø°Ôµµ ±×´Â ÀÚ±â ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ ¸ðµç °ÍÀ» ¹Þ¾ÆµéÀÌ¸é¼ ¹ÎøÇÏ°Ô µÇ¾ú´Ù´Â °ÍÀ» ¹ß°ßÇÏ°Ô µÇ¾ú´Ù. ±×´Â °è¼ÓÇؼ È£¸£¸ó Ä¡·á¸¦ ¹Þ°í ÀÖ´Ù.
"People started commenting that I had so much more bounce and energy," he said. He lost 50 pounds - thanks, he said, to diet changes and exercise made possible by the increased vigor. ±×´Â "»ç¶÷µéÀº ´õ ź·Â ÀÖ°í ÈûÀÌ ÀÖ´Ù°í ¸»Çϱ⠽ÃÀÛÇß´Ù"°í ¹àÈ÷°í ÀÖ´Ù. ±×´Â ÀÚ½ÅÀÌ ¸»ÇÏ´Â °Í°ú °°ÀÌ ½Ä»çÀÇ º¯È¿Í Á¡Â÷ °ÈµÇ°í Àִ Ȱ·ÂÀ¸·Î °¡´ÉÇØÁø ¿îµ¿ ´öÅÿ¡ 50 ÆÄ¿îµå¸¦ °¨·®Çß´Ù.
So Dr. Livesey, then an internist in New Hampshire, decided to go into business for himself. With a colleague, Dr. Joseph Raffaele, who went on a similar regimen, he founded Anti-Aging Medicine Associates, a clinic in Manhattan. They are part of a growing movement among doctors to offer a hormone replacement therapy that claims to restore the bodies and energy of youth. ±×·¡¼ ±× ¶§ ´ç½Ã¿¡ ´º ÇÜÇÁ¼Å Áö¿ªÀÇ ³»°ú Àü¹®ÀÇ¿´´ø ¶óÀ̺꼼À̹ڻç´Â ½º½º·Î ÀÌ ºÐ¾ß¿¡ ¶Ù¾îµé±â·Î °á½ÉÇß´Ù. ºñ½ÁÇÑ ºÐ¾ß¿¡ ÀÖ´ø µ¿·áÀÎ ÁÒ¼Á ¶óÆÄ¿¤ ¹Ú»ç¿Í ÇÔ²² ±×´Â ¸ÇÇÏÅÏ Áö¿ª¿¡ ³ëÈ ¹æÁö ÀÇÇÐ Çùȸ¶ó°í ÇÏ´Â º´¿øÀ» ¼¼¿ü´Ù. Until recently, most scientists considered anti-aging treatments to be little more than snake oil, provided by hucksters. Now, few doubt that growth hormone and testosterone can reshape aging bodies, potentially making them more youthful. But whether they counteract aging is unknown. And their long-term risks are ill defined. So medical experts ask whether it is right to regard aging as a disease, as fierce as a malignant cancer, to be fought with any and all means, tested or not.
