Senate Rejects Tougher Fuel Mileage Standards
상원, 강화된 연료 소비율 기준 거부
The Senate gave automakers a reprieve Wednesday by rejecting a plan to require that they produce cars, trucks and sport utility vehicles that run 50 percent farther on a gallon of gas.
The industry and its unions lobbied hard against requiring a 36 mile per gallon average by 2015. Supporters of the higher standard said it would save millions of barrels of oil and could be reached through current and emerging technologies.
Instead, the Senate by a 62-38 vote told the Transportation Department to develop new fuel economy rules over the next two years, but did not require specific mileage increases.

자동차 업계와 조합은 2015년까지 1 갤런 당 주행거리가 평균 36마일이 되도록 하는 이 계획에 반대하여 적극적으로 로비활동을 펼쳤다. 기준 강화를 주장하는 사람들은 이 계획을 실시하면 수백 만 갤런의 휘발유를 절약하고 현재와 앞으로의 기술에 모두 적용할 수 있다고 주장하고 있다.
62 대 38의 투표 결과를 보여준 상원은 그 대신 교통부에게 향후 2년에 걸쳐 새로운 연료 경제법을 개발하라고 지시했다. 하지만 구체적인 연료 소비율 증가를 요구하지는 않았다.
이와는 별개로 상원은 56 대 44로, 앞으로의 연료 소비율 증가에서 픽업트럭을 제외하기로 결정했다.
