A: Henry, can I talk with you for a minute?
B: Sure chief, what's up?
A: I got a phone call this morning from one of the secretaries who works under you. Apparently the other night you yelled at her when she asked you if she could go home early to make dinner for her brother who happens to be visiting her from Pusan.
B: Yeah that's right. There was a lot of work to do for the Bonanza project. I had to stay late, and I always ask my secretaries to stay as late as I do. What's wrong with that?
A: Henry, let me put it to you this way: If you keep your employees happy, they will do better work for you. If they are happy, they like their work, and therefore will make more money for the company. Think of it this way: A couple of extra hours that she takes off for family business, traded for many more hours of great work she'll do for you for as long as she works here.
B: That's a good point. I've never thought of that way before. I'm sorry. Next time I'll be a bit more thoughtful of my employees' needs.
A : 헨리, 잠깐 얘기 좀 할 수 있어요?
B : 물론입니다 사장님, 무슨 일이시죠?
A : 오늘 아침 당신 밑에서 일하는 비서 중 한명에게서 전화를 받았어요. 며칠 전 저녁에 그녀가 부산에서 남동생이 찾아와 저녁을 해주러 일찍 들어가도 되는지 물었더니 호통을 쳤다면서요.
B : 네 맞습니다. 보난자 프로젝트 때문에 할 일이 산더미였습니다. 제가 늦게까지 사무실에 남아 있어야 했는데, 저는 비서들에게 항상 제가 갈 때까지 사무실에 있으라고 합니다. 그게 무슨 문제가 되나요?
A : 헨리, 이렇게 생각해 봐요. 당신이 부하 직원들을 행복하게 해주면 그들도 당신에게 더욱 잘해줄 거예요. 직원들이 행복하면 자신들의 일을 좋아하게 될 테고 그러면 회사에 더 많은 돈을 벌어줄 거예요. 이렇게 생각해봐요. 그녀가 집안 일 때문에 몇 시간을 쓰는 대신 여기에 일하는 동안은 더 많은 시간을 아주 열심히 일할 거예요.
B : 좋은 생각이네요. 전에는 그런 식으로 생각해 본 적이 없었어요. 죄송합니다. 다음에는 부하 직원들의 요구에 좀더 신중을 기하겠습니다.
