Tokyo, Japan (AP) = Keizo Obuchi, who was replaced as Japan's prime minister last month after suffering a stroke, died Sunday, officials said. He was 62. Obuchi died at 4:07 p.m. in Tokyo's Juntendo Hospital, where he had been hospitalized in a coma since last month, said Michiko Shimizu, an official in Obuchi's administrative office.
Obuchi suffered a stroke and was hospitalized April 2. He later lapsed into a coma and was put on artificial respiration. Days later, Parliament elected Yoshiro Mori as his successor.
Mori on Sunday expressed his "heartfelt condolences" and praised his close friend's achievements. "He dealt decisively with important measures affecting this nation's economic revival as well as its internal and foreign policies," Mori told Kyodo News agency.
