Divorce and Family

Are children better off if their parents remain in a troubled marriage or split up? Do children of divorce fare better if their parents remarry? And if there are ill effects, how long do they last? These are only a few of the questions that in recent years have pushed their way to the forefront of the contentious public debate about divorce, families and children.
But whatever side advocates take, chances are that most of the research they cite has been influenced in some way by E. Mavis Hetherington. In the early 1970's, Ms. Hetherington, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia, began long-term studies of Hundreds of families, pioneering new research methods to determine just how divorce affected both parents and children.
