Moscow (AP) = Russians fed up with a decade of tumult and economic decline voted for a new president Sunday, with the ex-KGB agent Vladimir Putin the favorite to take the helm of this young democracy. The election was declared valid late Sunday afternoon when voter turnout topped 50 percent, averting the need for a second round, the Central Election Commission said.
Alexander Veshnyakov, the head of the commission, said he expected the final turnout to be between 62-70 percent, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported. Turnout has been above 60 percent in Russia's major post-Soviet elections. Many voters admire Putin's vigor and hope he can clean up the world's largest country and restore its global clout. Casting his ballot in Moscow, the acting president told reporters he was voting ``for the future of Russia.'' He added that he was confident of success at the polls.
