Infant death rates still high in poor sections of Brooklyn

Here in central Brooklyn -- where storefronts are boarded, housing projects stand in defiant opposition to the boom towns, and the hospitals are more or less broke -- babies are dying at rates that the city as a whole has not seen in nearly two decades. And they die, in some cases, at a rate double what the federal government has set as the infant mortality goal for the nation.
Often, they die months before they were meant to be born, their bodies a tangle of minute bones and skin, weighed in grams rather than pounds. Some never see their mother's faces; they are gone right after birth. Others leave the hospital with a shopping bag of drugs and a mother overwhelmed by her own myriad problems, and do not make it to their first birthday.

상점 정면은 판자로 둘러쳐 있고 신흥 도시 맞은편에는 주택단지가 거만하게 솟아 있으며 대부분의 병원들은 다소 파산상태에 있는 부룩클린 중심부에선 거의 20여년 동안 이 도시 전체가 경험하지 못한 비율로 아이들이 죽어가고 있다. 몇몇 경우, 유아사망률이 연방정부가 정해놓은 유아사망률 기준치보다 2배에 이른다.
종종 아주 작은 뼈들과 피부가 뒤얽혀 겨우 몇 그램 정도 밖에 되지 않은 몸을 한 채 아이들은 태어나기 몇 달 전에 이미 죽는다. 몇몇은 어머니의 얼굴을 한번도 보지 못한 채 출생 후 곧바로 사망한다. 다른 아이들은 약이 든 쇼핑백과 자기 자신의 무수한 문제들로 인해 당황해 있는 어머니와 함께 병원을 떠나지만 첫 번째 생일을 맞을 때까지 살지 못하기도 한다.
