Sun Microsystems is readying a new product for launch that will compete head-to-head with IBM and BEA Systems for a share of the enterprise-application server market.

The Sun One Application Server 7, Enterprise Edition, is expected to offer better protection against system crashes and outages by delivering 99.999 percent availability, or less than 5.25 minutes of downtime per year, the company says.

The forthcoming release will be available next month at a price of US$10,000. The J2EE (Java 2 Enterprise Edition)1.3-compatible product will be offered to enterprises and independent software vendors (ISVs) on the Linux, Windows, HP-UX and AIX platforms, as well as the Solaris Operating Environment.
