Debra Miller claims in her U.S. District Court suit that she suffered cardiac arrest on April 28, 2000, 16 days after flying economy class from Paris to Newark, N.J., and then on to San Francisco. The lawsuit argues that the cause of her collapse was deep vein thrombosis, supposedly suffered as a consequence of the many hours she had spent "essentially immobilized during her flight," according to her attorneys, the firm of O'Reilly, Collins & Danko of San Mateo.

"The airlines are well-aware and have been for some time that passengers are not being allotted enough leg room to sustain health on long, international flights," says her attorney, Michael Danko. "But they would rather pack passengers in like sardines and sell more tickets than protect the health of their customers."

Deep vein thrombosis is defined as a blood clot (thrombosis) that forms in the deep vein system of the lower leg. Usually the clot forms between the ankle and the upper calf. If the clot becomes dislodged, it can travel through the bloodstream to the lungs or heart and cause sudden death. Even if it remains in the leg, it can cause serious damage.
