Rescues resume in Mozambique
Maputo, Mozambique (AP) = Rescue helicopters Sunday resumed searches for hundreds of people believed still stranded in receding floodwaters, while efforts to get aid to an estimated million more Mozambicans gained momentum. President Joachim Chissano said that because the scale of the crisis was not immediately known, the international community had been slow to respond, but was now ``beginning to catch up.'' A minimum of $250 million would be needed for reconstruction, he said. Chissano said people affected by the floods would need to be fed for at least 10 months until they could grow new crops. Aid workers said they expected the death toll from the disaster to soar into the thousands as floodwaters in southern Mozambique receded and revealed the mud-covered remains of the dead.
