인터넷이 보편화되기 전에는 ‘mail’ 이라고 하면 우편 발송을 뜻했다. 하지만 지금은 거의 모든 서신이 인터넷으로 전달되면서 ‘mail’이라고 하면 인터넷 상의 ‘e-mail’을 생각하는 경우가 대부분이다. 이런 혼란을 피하기 위해서 일반 메일은 ‘snail mail’이라고 한다. ‘snail’은 ‘달팽이’라고 하는 뜻인데 일반 메일이 인터넷 이 메일과 비교하면 거의 달팽이 수준 정도라고 하기 때문에 이런 표현을 쓰게 된 것이다.
A: Bob!!!!!!! Oh man, are we in for it!
B: What’s the problem this time Doug?
A: I just got off the phone with the Bank of Montreal, and they want to know where the updated statistical analysis is on the current status of the Bonanza stock!
B: We mailed it two days ago.
A: Two days ago?! It should have gotten there by now!!!!! Oh no! What if it got lost in the mail? That would terrible! Wait a minute, you didn’t send it by snail mail did you?
B: Ah . . . well, ah . . . (heh, heh), actually I think I did. I figured we could save a little money for the company by sending by sea mail. They said it should get there next month some time.
A : 밥!!!!! 오 문제가 생겼어요!
B : 이 시간에 무슨 일이에요 더그?
A : 지금 막 몬트리얼 은행과 통화했는데, 보난자 주식의 현재 상태에 대한 업 데이트 된 통계 분석이 어디 있는지 알고 싶어했어요.
B : 이틀 전에 발송했는데요.
A : 이틀 전이라고요? 지금쯤은 도착했을 텐데!!! 오 이런! 발송 중에 분실되었다면 어떡하죠. 그건 끔찍한 일이에요! 잠깐만요, 일반 우편으로 보낸 건 아니겠죠?
B : 어.. 저.. 어... (흠, 흠), 사실 일반 우편으로 보냈는데요. 배편으로 보내면 회사 경비를 좀 절약할 수 있다고 생각했거든요. 다음달쯤에 도착할 거라고 말했어요.
